The first of seven commemorative VC stones honouring their courage was unveiled today at Wheatley Hill cemetery. It was exactly one hundred years to the day after his act of heroism for which he was awarded the VC.The event was attended by forty seven members of his family along with Cllr Jan Blakey, the Chairman of Durham County Council,Sue Snowdon, Lord Lieutenant of County Durham,members of the DLI Association,the Rifles, DCC,Wheatley Hill Heritage Centre,Durham County Council, Ivor Crowther Head of Heritage Lottery Fund North East and Durham’s Chief Constable Mike Barton.
