53.11 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MINUTES – AMENDMENT

Please amend para 13(b) of the Minutes of the Executive Committee Meeting held on Wednesday 15 June 2011 to read as follows:

Gateshead & Newcastle advised the Committee that their September & December meetings had been converted to Social Mornings and all were invited.

54.11 CENOTAPH CEREMONY 2011

The Royal British Legion will once again be co-ordinating the Ex-Service Contingents attending the Cenotaph Ceremony & March Past on Sunday 13 November 2011. The Association as been allocated a maximum of 60 tickets and any branch or individual member who wishes to apply for tickets must do so via The Rifles Durham Office by Friday 19 August 2011. Anyone wishing to attend must be aware that they are likely to be standing in Whitehall for at least 90 minutes prior to the March Past and that the marching distance is over 1 mile, possibly in inclement weather.

55.11 ANNUAL REUNION – MEALS & ACCOMMODATION

All branches and those on our mailing list have received the Warning Order for the 2011 Annual Reunion. Please note that applications for accommodation and the Reunion Lunch must be made to The Rifles Durham Office on the form provided by Friday 19 August 2011. Payment for the lunch must accompany all applications.

56.11 CHRISTMAS CARDS 2011

Enclosed with this Bulletin please find an application for the purchase of the 2011 Christmas Card. The card features a Bugle Major in full dress circa 1850 with a wonderful background view of the River Wear and Durham Cathedral; the spire of St. Nicholas’s Church can also be seen. The cards are priced at 75p each and are a limited edition 1500.

57.11 CHRISTMAS CARDS – PREVIOUS YEARS

The Rifles Durham Office is holding a supply of Christmas Cards from previous years and these may be purchased in mixed packs of ten at £3.00 per pack.

58.11 DLI SWEEPSTAKE

Branches who have sold their ticket allocation are asked to return counterfoils and money to The Rifles Durham Office as soon as they are able to do so. Well done those branches who have already done so and a big thank you to all on our mailing list; many have sent donations to the Memorial Fund in addition to buying the tickets.

59.11 WORLD WAR 11 & KOREAN VETERANS

Would branches please compile a list of their members who are either WWII or Korean Veterans. Details of service with number, rank and names with addresses and telephone numbers would be appreciated. We are considering funding options for transport and accommodation when the date of the Memorial dedication date is known. There is no urgency but an early response would be appreciated.

60.11 CLOTHING STOCK

A supply of baseball caps and other items of popular DLI embroidered clothing have been ordered and will be available shortly. Please telephone Shirley on 0191 3865496 to confirm availability.

Japanese Sword Going Home

The family of the late Lieutenant Colonel William “Bill” Weightman paid an emotional farewell to the sword taken from Major General Shozaburo Iino before being shipped to the descendants of the officer he had taken it from at the end of the Second World War.

Museum Talks Programme

Saturday 23 July - 2.00pm .. Filming the Blitz

 

Presented by Professor Jo Fox, Dept. of History, Durham University.

Examining the work of the wartime documentarists of the Crown Film Unit and their contribution both to the war effort and to the memory of the Blitz.

Neil Hymas’ Faithful Foray

DLI MEMORIAL APPEAL

On the 16th July Sgt Neil Hymas of the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers set off on a trek around the historical boundary of County Durham..The distance covered will be approximately 240 miles and he hopes to complete it in 8 days despite carrying a load in excess of 70lbs and will have no support.
