    1. GUYZANCE COMMEMORATION –

      1. The 72nd Anniversary of the Guyzance Tragedy occurred on 17 Jan 2017. A short Ceremony was conducted at the memorial beside Guyzance Weir by the DLI Chaplain the Revd Kenneth Crawford accompanied by officers of the Association, Branch representatives, Standard Bearers and a Bugler. This commemorated the drowning, on exercise, of eight DLI and two trainees from the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment there on 17 Jan 1945. Local councillors and parishioners were also present at the commemoration.

    1. WORKING TOGETHER GROUP

      1. The Working Together Group of the Association, DLI Friends and Education Staff of the DLI Collection met together on Thursday 26 January and will meet again on 28 February at 1000 hrs at Seven Hills to begin to put together a programme of outreach work to enable the DLI Friends and Education Group to benefit from the skills and military knowledge of the members of the DLI Association.

      2. 15 Members of the group have met already and it is hoped that others will join the group.

      3. A programme has been drawn up to take this forward.

      1. The deadline date for submission to the Association Secretary is 17 February 2017.

      2. The format was tabled with the meeting papers for the Ordinary Executive Meeting of 16 November 2016, and it was contained in the December bulletin, but can also be obtained from the Association Secretary

      3. Both returns can be made on the same sheet.

    1. PHOTOGRAPHS FOR THE 2018 CALENDAR

      1. Thanks to those branches which are sending in photos of branch activities for the 2018 Calendar.

      2. I am hoping that by around September this year I will have sufficient photos to start putting together the calendar. It may be that we will be able to have two pictures per month. It depends on what you send me. It is important that the pictures you send are as high a quality as possible. If you are taking them on a mobile phone, choose the highest setting possible or when they are enlarged they may become pixillated (individual pixels, small single-coloured square display elements that comprise the bitmap, are visible) to the extent it may be impossible to use them.

    1. DEDICATION OF THE NEW STANDARD FOR THE BISHOP AUCKLAND BRANCH, THE COMMEMORATION OF THE VICTORIA CROSS PAVING STONE FOR ROLAND BOYS BRADFORD & THE UNVEILING OF THE BRADFORD STATUE IN THE NEWLY REFURBISHED MEMORIAL GARDEN AT WITTON PARK

      1. This commemoration will take place on Sat 11 March 2017 in the village of Witton Park where all the Bradford brothers were born. The event will begin with a dedication of the new branch standard for Bishop Auckland in the Memorial Park. Following this dedication the Commemorative Paving Stone to Roland Boys Bradford and the new statue will be unveiled. All Association members and branch standards are welcome to the two ceremonies. Sadly there will be no ‘indoor accommodation or refreshments’ for those attending, other than those specifically invited, as the indoor accommodation at Witton Park is too small to accommodate it.

      2. Please note that the village will be closed to traffic for the duration of the ceremony, which will mean that parking will be extremely difficult in the area, if not impossible in the village itself and movement for those with mobility problems extremely problematic.

    1. SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES FOR THE DLI ASSOCIATION INDOOR GAMES – 19 MARCH 2017

      1. This is to remind Secretaries of the need to submit Entries for the 2017 Association Indoor games by Friday 24 February 2017.

      2. For those who require it, a copy of the Indoor Games Branch Entry Form and the Rules governing the Indoor Games can be found at Annex A to this Bulletin.

    1. LIGHT INFANTRY EVENT – SATURDAY 25 FEBRUARY 2017

      1. A Light Infantry (North East) Social Event will take place in the Don War Memorial Bar, Silver St, Stockton-on-Tees, TS18 1SX, on Saturday 25th Feb from 1900 hours. All veterans of the Light Infantry and the County Regiments are welcome. As usual it will be not for profit, and all money raised on the night will be distributed equally between the Light Division and Rifles Bugle Association, the 2017 LI reunion (Shrewsbury) and The Rifles Charity (Care for Casualties). Hot and cold buffet is available. Dress casual. Tickets £5.00, pay at the door. Once again the raffle is a big part of the funds raised and we rely on your generosity for contributions. The venue is open till late.

    1. GRAVENSTAFEL RIDGE COMMEMORATION & 8/11 BATTALIONS O.C.A. DINNER

      1. This is the Warning Order for these events which take place on Saturday 22 April 2017.

      2. The Gravenstafel Commemoration and Retreat sounded by the Durham Army Cadet Force Band & Bugles takes on the lawn beside the Memorial at the College of Hild-Bede at 1800 hrs.

      3. The 8/11 Bns O.C.A. Annual Dinner at the Gilesgate RAC, commencing at 2000 hrs.

      4. More details of and application for these events will be issued later by the O.C.A.

Monthly Bulletin January 2017

    1. THE BUGLE – The Journal of The Rifles

      1. Copies of latest issue of THE BUGLE, the Journal of The Rifles, are now held in The Rifles Durham Office. This is a high quality publication in full cover with lots of first class photographs and contains all the up-to-date information about The Rifles. It also has a large section of Regimental Association news from all the counties including a fourteen page section on News from Durham, which is far in excess of what the other Associations submit. It is an annual publication priced at £13 per copy and can be obtained from The Rifles office at Elvet Waterside or by telephoning 0191 3865496. Alternatively it can be purchased at the same price on a subscription basis direct from RHQ the Rifles, Peninsula Barracks, Romsey Road, Winchester, Hants SO23 8TS by completing and sending a standing order form available at Annex B to this Bulletin or in the magazine itself or from the Rifles Durham Office.

      2. The information in ‘The News from Durham’ contained in The Bugles is taken from information (articles) and photographs submitted to the Regimental Secretary (Durham) by individuals and/or branches throughout the year. If your branch takes part in interesting activities, and you wish to see them covered in The Bugle, details of them should be submitted to the Regimental Secretary so that they can be included in subsequent issues.

    1. AGM OF THE DLI ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE – 19 APRIL 2017 – 1400 hrs

      1. As notified in the minutes of the last Ordinary Meeting of the DLI Executive, and in the December issue of the Association Monthly Bulletin, this meeting will take place at The Rifles Office, Durham beginning at 1400 hours.

      2. The agenda can be found at Annex A to this bulletin.

      3. All branches are asked to ensure they are represented at this meeting.

    1. ASSOCIATION INDOOR GAMES 2017

      1. Branch Entries and Entry Fees for the DLI Association Indoor Games are required by 24 February 2017. The Entry Form was distributed through the December 2016 Monthly Bulletin. The location of the Games is confirmed as the Belle View Social Club, Kendal Road, Hartlepool, TS251QU

      2. The Rules of the Indoor Games were also distributed in the December Monthly Bulletin. They will be strictly applied.

      3. Please note that members of the Association in addition to the team members are also invited to the Indoor Games. However if they wish to have a meal this must be paid for in advance. The cost is £4.00 and should be paid to the Association Secretary by 24 February 2017.

    1. FORMAT OF THE 2018 DLI ASSOCIATION CALENDAR

      1. This will follow a similar format to the 2017 Calendar.

      2. The success of the calendar lies in the sales which can be achieved for it. As well as showing interesting activities sales are boosted by having recognisable photographs of Association members taking part. The more high quality photos of interesting Association activities with members involved the better. Please sent electronic photos to the Association Secretary for inclusion in next years calendar as soon as they become available.

    1. 72nd ANNIVERSARY OF THE GUYZANCE TRAGEDY

17.06.01 The short annual Commemoration Service will take place at 1100 hrs at the Guyzance Weir, Guyzance, Northumberland on Tuesday 17 January 2017 to remember the deaths during training of 8 Durham Light Infantry Trainees and two trainees of the Duke of Wellington’s regiment who were drowned at the Guyzance weir on 17 January 1945 when training for river crossings in the latter stages of World War 2. DLI Association Standards are invited to the commemoration. The ceremony will be conducted by the DLI Association Chaplain the Revd Kenneth Crawford in the presence of members of the Association and a bugler. The opportunity to retire to the Northumberland Arms will follow the ceremony.

16.73 SEASONS GREETINGS

16.73.01 The Chairman, Major Paul Wharton MM, the Vice Chairman, Major Chris Lawton MBE DL, the Secretary, Lt Col John Heron TD, and the Rifles Office Administration Officer Mrs Shirley Nicholson extend to all Association members their season’s greetings and best wishes for the 2017, coupled with their thanks to all members for their enthusiastic support of the Association activities and enterprises which have taken place throughout 2016.

16.74 RECEPTION AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE

16.74.01 On 29th November 2016 three members of the Association were honoured to attend a Reception given at Buckingham Palace by The Queen to celebrate the Patronages and Affiliations of Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, the Hon. Lady Ogilvy. They were Major Paul Wharton MM, Lt Col John Heron TD and Mr Michael Coulson of the Durham Branch of the Association.

    1. WARNING ORDER-DLI EXECUTUVE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2017

      1. This will take place on Wednesday 19 April 2017 at 1400 hrs at the Rifles Office Durham. Branches are asked to ensure that they have a representative to attend this meeting

      2. An agenda for the meeting will be issued by the Secretary in due course

16.76 DLI ASSOCIATION INDOOR GAMES 2017

16.76.01 The DLI Association Indoor Games for 2017 have been awarded to the Hartlepool Branch

16.76.02 The Games will take place on Sunday 19 March 2017 at The Belle View Social Club, Kendal Rd, Hartlepool TS25 1QU.

16.76.03 Hartlepool Branch will be responsible for all arrangements at the venue and will liaise closely with the Secretary in terms of the lunch menu and tickets.

16.76.04 Rules for the conduct of the Games can be seen at Annex A to this Bulletin. The Entry Form can be seen at Annex B to this Bulletin.

    1. ASSOCIATION CHRISTMAS CARDS AND CALENDARS

      1. Association Calendars and Christmas Card are still available at the Rifles Office Durham.

      2. Calendars are priced at £5.00 and are accompanied by an enveloped for posting. Their theme is activities of the Association during the year and feature members of the Association.

      3. Christmas cards are available at £5.00 for 10. They are on the theme of the Battle of the Somme which took place 100 years ago in 1916.

Train saluted by The Fusiliers

Virgin Trains has worked with The Fusiliers to dedicate a journey today to those who served their country in the Armed Forces.

The 06.00 service from Berwick to London King’s Cross, was saluted by serving Army personnel and veterans at Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, York and Retford stations.

The train, which hosted dozens of veterans and a military band on-board, was headed by Virgin Trains’ “Battle of Britain Memorial Flight” locomotive 91110, one of two of its locomotives which have been dedicated to the Armed Forces.

The Fusiliers’ corps of drums played the popular North East song “Blaydon Races” to welcome the veterans into London King’s Cross station shortly after 10.00 where they were joined by the commanding officer of the First Fusiliers, Lieutenant Colonel Jez Lamb MC, for a short ceremony.

Lieutenant Colonel Jez Lamb said: “We Fusiliers are incredibly proud of our rich heritage. This year, in particular, we remember the incredible deeds of the Fusiliers who served with such distinction 100 years ago.

“I am therefore very grateful to all the staff at Virgin Trains for this amazing gesture of support. The 'Remember the Fallen, Remembrance Journey' allowed us all to honour our forefathers' sacrifice in a very special and unique way. It was especially poignant this week as tomorrow will mark 100 years since the end of the Battle of the Somme.”

David Horne, Virgin Trains’ managing director for the east coast route, said: “Our 936-mile route serves a number of the UK’s Army regiments and the British Army's largest training establishment, Catterick Garrison, in North Yorkshire.

“Many of our 3,100 staff, or their friends and family, have also served in the British Armed Forces, or continue to serve as reservists. We’re incredibly proud of them, and all of those men and women who have served their country.

“It’s been a privilege to dedicate a journey to them during the week of Remembrance Sunday, and for our train to have received a salute by The Fusiliers at stations across England.”

Virgin Trains’ Andrew Kelman, from Newcastle, volunteered to drive the train as he had served in The Fusiliers from 1996 to 2002.

Andrew, who started driving trains in 2008, said: “It was an absolute honour to drive the train today, and it was an emotional experience as it brought back many memories for me.

“I would not be where I am today without the things I learned serving in the Army, and the salutes we received at the stations were particularly special.”

16.64 “THE FAITHFUL” INKERMAN DINNER

16.64.01 The “Faithful” Inkerman Dinner took place at the Dubmire RBL Club in Fence Houses on Friday 4 November 2016. 106 members sat down to dinner which was a remarkable number when considering the competing social events taking place that evening. Heading the top table was Mr Ralph Harrison (Chairman), Mr Brian Laverick (Secretary/Treasurer) and Lt Col John Heron TD (President), who were joined by Major Paul Wharton MM, (Chairman DLI Association) Major Chris Lawton MBE DL (Rifles Secretary Durham), Lt Col Jimmy Brown, Major John Jackson, Mr John Adey (Treasurer Chester-le-Street War Memorial Fund), Major Donald McDonald, Mr Colin Smith (Co-op Distribution Manager), Mr John Anderson (Dubmire RBL Club). Also present were Lt Col Ted Kemp, Major Brian Snaith, Major Chris Wheeler, Major Richard Booth, Major Mike Foster, Major Albert Armstrong, Major Mike van der Gucht, Capt Chris Matthews and Mr Peter Halligan. Mr Adey had committed a sum of £3000 from the no-longer-required funds of the Chester-le-Street Memorial Project, whose work was now complete, to the business of moving the VC Stone to its new location should this be required. Mr Colin Smith who provided the 1st prize in the raffle also made a commitment to the project. A very good night was had by all.

16.65 “THE FAITHFUL” INKERMAN DINNER CLUB VICTORIA CROSS STONE CEREMONY

16.65.01 The Victoria Cross Stone ceremony organised by the “Faithful” Inkerman Dinner Club took place for the last time at the VC Stone situated beside the former Durham Light Infantry Museum on Sunday 6 November 2016. A faithful few were present in the rain to mark the occasion, during which the names of all the DLI Soldiers awarded the Victoria Cross were read by the Chairman Mr Ralph Harrison who also spoke the words of the ‘Exhortation’. The life and gallantry of Sgt John Murray who was awarded his VC in New Zealand in 1864 was recalled by Lt Col John Heron TD. Wreaths were laid by Col Heron and Major Chris Lawton MBE DL. The Bugles of the Durham Army Cadet Force were present to sound a Fanfare, followed by the Last Post, & Reveille, following the commemorative silence. The assembled company sang the Regimental Hymn, ‘Abide with Me’, together for the last time at this location, finishing with the National Anthem. The ceremony was concluded with the call ‘No More Parades Today’, after which the company dispersed. Next Year it is hoped that the ceremony will take place at the VC Stone’s new site on Palace Green.

16.66 DURHAM CATHEDRAL FESTIVAL OF REMEMBRANCE SERVICE

16.66.01 The traditional service of Remembrance prior top Remembrance day will take place at Durham Cathedral on Saturday 12th November 2016. This year will see the largest Muster Parade to date from the military, emergency services, youth organisations, standards, veterans and Chelsea Pensioners.  The focus will be the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Jutland.  The Battle of the Somme lasted 141 days ending on 18 November 1916. The British dead on the first day alone totalled 19,240 and by the end of the Battle there were over 1 million casualties.  The Battle of Jutland on 30 May/1 June 1916 was the largest, and most decisive sea battle of WW1. 

    1. BILLINGHAM RBL /ARMY BENEVOLENT FUND LAUNCH OF THE 2016 POPPY APPEAL – 1 NOVEMBER 2016 AT BILLINGHAM FORUM

      1. Members of the Stockton Branch DLI Association were in evidence at the concert at the Billingham Forum on Tuesday 1st November, where Billingham Branch Royal British Legion launched their 2016 Poppy Appeal. Terry Gilbert; Stockton Standard Bearer, Denis Grubb; RAFA Standard Bearer, Pat Coyle and were hosts and ushers. The event was attended by Major Chris Lawton MBE, DL (Rifles Secretary Durham) and Lt Col John Heron (Secretary SDLI Association) as well as many Stockton Branch members including 96 year old Tom Coyne.

    1. FORMAL OPENING DLI COLLECTION AT SEVEN HILLS, SPENNYMOOR

      1. The DLI Durham Light Infantry Collection centre was formally opened on Thursday 3 November 2016 at the Seven Hills storage facility in Spennymoor. Here the collection can be stored in properly regulated conditions and made available for members of the public who wish to see it. All they have to do is to make a booking with staff to see the items of their interest which can be brought out of store by experienced staff. Members of the DLI Trustees following their morning meeting stayed for the opening where many were impressed at the storage potential of the facility. A newly commissioned inventory of all the Collection has recently been carried out. A number of items which had not been seen for a long time were re-discovered and brought onto the collections register. An area is available for research and study, with proper electronic links.

16.69.03 The calendar has a range of photographs of events during 2016 in which the Association has taken part, from the Indoor Games in March to the celebration of the valour of Roland Boys Bradford on 1st October showing many Association members at these events.

16.69.04 The photographs comprising the calendar with their captions can be seen at Annex A to this bulletin.

16.69.05 The cost of the calendar is £5.00. It is the same shape as last year so will fit onto your wall in the same place as previously. They can be collected free of postal charges from the Rifles Office. For those subscribers who wish to have them sent to their home address the cost is £6.00 per calendar.

16.69.06 The calendars will be available at the Ordinary Executive meeting on 16 November.

    1. DLI ASSOCIATION AND DLI FRIENDS WORKING TOGETHER GROUP

      1. Following the successful meeting of Presidents, \Chairmen and Secretaries from the Association with the DLI Friends and the Education staff at the ‘Working Together Meeting’ at Seven Hills, it is hoped that the various branches are getting together with their members to work out how best they can help. A development meeting to take this forward will be held in the New Year when it is hoped the branches will have plenty of ideas to take this forward.

    1. DEATHS REPORTED

      1. The following deaths have been reported to the Rifles Office since the publication of last month’s bulletin.

      2. Benjamin ‘Benny’ Hunter died: 3 November 2016. He was a former DLI Bugler and a former Member of the Hartlepool Branch

        Francis George Lorraine died: 2 November 2016. He served with Durham Light Infantry

        Steve Barker born: 14 Oct 1916 and died: 9 November 2016. He served with the Durham Light Infantry in WW2 and was POW .He was a Centenarian Member of the Chester-le-Street Branch DLI Association
